W3C has published “W3C and the State of the Web in the AI Era,” a paper by its Strategy Team examining how the organisation’s technical agenda should respond to the rise of AI agents. The document is intended to help build a shared vision for the web’s evolution, starting with AI.
The paper says W3C should provide a forum for stakeholders from the web and AI communities to discuss the risks and opportunities of AI-driven changes to web user agents, and to develop responsible standards. It emphasises that the web should remain centred on humanity while enabling AI agents to act on people’s behalf.
W3C’s Vice President of Technical Strategy, Philippe Le Hegaret, wrote the paper, which will inform discussions at TPAC 2026, the organisation’s annual community event. The document describes how current and emerging AI technologies intersect with W3C’s roadmap and includes early recommendations for community feedback.
The report is scheduled to be presented at the Web and AI Interest Group session on 29 October. Feedback is also being invited through public-webai@w3.org and the w3c/webai-roadmap repository.
